Review: Yokai Watch Watch Toy (US Release Version)

Hey guys! This is going to be my first review I'm doing on this blog. I will be reviewing the official US Yokai Watch Watch Toy. The watch includes the tribal music for each yokai tribe, sounds, phrases of each yokai, and two exclusive yokai medals featuring Jibanyan and Whisper. The watch also can identify 100+ different yokai medals released up to December 1, 2016.

I'll start off with the packaging.  The watch and exclusive is covered by a two layers of hard plastic for protection and surrounded by a foot long cardboard featuring the Yokai Watch logo, Jibanyan, Whisper, Nate, Komasan, Komajiro, Walkappa, Dismarelda, and Wiglin. The cardboard packaging also includes that the watch can recognize over 100+ medals.

The back features a graphic of the watch in action with the Jibanyan exclusive medal, the description of the watch being able to recognize 100+ medals being released between now and December 1, 2016, and 3 ways you can use the yokai medals given to you and others you can purchase separately. The 3 ways include:

1. Summon using the watch
2. Discover on the Yokai Watch Land mobile app (Available for Apple and Android)
3. Collect in Yokai Medallion Book

If you are interested in buying more medals for the watch, app, or just to collect, there are separate small blind bag packages available usually wherever the watch is sold. I recommend checking your local Toys-R-Us, Gamestop, or order online in bulks/individuals through Amazon or your preferred online shopping sources. I personally will be buying the blind bag medal packages, medal book, and downloading the app to get the full experience. That however will be discussed/reviewed on a later blog post.

The contents included the watch, two exclusive medals, a two-sided promotional poster, and two instruction manuals. One of the instruction manuals was for how to insert medals, its different functions, and what it basically does. The second manual explained the integrated ways to use the medals including instructions to insert medals into the medallion book and information on the Yokai Watch Land app game. Finally, the two-sided promotional poster basically promoted other Yokai Watch related toys, games, and the show itself. I will be hanging up the promotional poster since it makes a good poster to hang up.

Now on to the actual watch. I took it out of the packaging trying to preserve it as much of it as I could. The cute thing is, when I separated the plastic from the watch, it made the opening noise when you open the lens! I don't know if it was by coincidence, but it made me feel super excited about opening it!

The watch itself is very bulky and somewhat heavy. Its definitely not recommended for everyday wear. However, the size adjustability is outstanding! I tested the sizing on my brother, who's wrist is 2x smaller than mine. It was neither too tight or too lose for us to wear. So even if you are an adult wanting your own yokai watch, the sizing issue will defiantly not be a problem!

I tested out the yokai medal summoning while wearing the watch on and off my wrist. To activate the summoning along with the tribal songs and phases, simply insert the yokai medal into the watch and let the magic happen! The overall volume of the music and phrases was VERY loud. I personally got a headache just from the first test. I honestly didn't mind since this was expected of a child's toy, loud and obnoxious. I kinda wish they had a volume adjuster or a way to turn off the sound but I also understand why they didn't add that feature since it would ruin the charm and point of the watch.

While doing the first test wearing the watch, the sound was somewhat muffled due to the speaker being located on the bottom of the watch. However, it didn't impact the volume as bad as I thought it would. When testing the second time with the watch off, it was loud like any other child's toy. Again, I wish they had some sort of volume adjuster or a way to turn off the sound. In the end, I might be taking out the batteries since its too loud for me. Its a children's toy so I had zero expectation for it to be quiet anyways but feel free to do whatever you like and adjust it to your likings!

Overall, the watch is so fun, very integrated, and a cool collectors item to have. I highly recommend this watch to both young and older age fans of Yokai Watch and for cosplayers wanting to cosplay Nate from the series. I will be using this watch for future cosplay reasons and maybe even as a j-fashion accessory!
